The Legacy Awards annual fundraiser and awards ceremony honors those who have significantly and positively impacted our community, state and nation. This year’s award winner is country music artist Mark Collie (“Even the Man in the Moon Is Cryin” and “Born to Love You”) for his contributions as a performer, songwriter and producer; his achievements in film and television; and his activism on behalf of diabetes research, prison reform and military veterans. In addition to receiving the 2022 Legacy Award, Collie will also perform live.
“My father served as governor for 10 years. Despite his share of challenges during his tenure, many qualities defined his legacy — namely the courage to make tough political decisions and to reach across the aisle to reach compromise,” said former U.S. Congressman Bob Clement (D-TN). “Every year our honorees are chosen because they embody many of those same qualities and we are looking forward to recognizing Mark Collie during this special event.”
The Clement Railroad Hotel Museum also welcomes special guest speaker Cal Turner Jr., a philanthropist and the former CEO of Dollar General. Turner began his career with Dollar General in 1965. The company was founded by his father and grandfather in 1939. He succeeded his father as president in 1977 and as chairman in 1988. At the time of his retirement in 2003, Dollar General had grown into a New York Stock Exchange retailer with more than 6,000 stores in 27 states and annual sales in excess of $6 billion. At the Legacy Event, Turner will speak on the importance of legacy and unveil portraits of former U.S. Congressman Bob Clement and Tennessee State Senator Anna Belle Clement O’Brien.
The 109-year-old Halbrook Hotel in Dickson is the birthplace of Governor Frank G. Clement. It was restored and reopened as the Clement Railroad Hotel Museum in 2009 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The history and heritage of Dickson County and the State of Tennessee are displayed through exhibits and collections housed in the museum.
Educational opportunities for students and adults include learning about Gov. Clement’s many accomplishments — providing free textbooks for children in public schools, establishing the first State Department of Mental Health, integrating public schools in Tennessee and planning/implementing the Tennessee interstate highway system. Daily tours are available to see exhibits about the Civil War era and railroading, in addition to traveling exhibits of interest.
Tickets for the Legacy Award Celebration are available for $100 per person. Admission includes refreshments, access to the museum and the Mark Collie concert and the chance to meet the star himself.
